Züm, the new transit service in Brampton, has announced that it will use Xcelsior model Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicles. Manufactured in Winnipeg, the buses use hybrid diesel-electric technology and, because they are lightweight, they are also 10-15 per cent more fuel efficient than conventional diesel vehicles.

The $285-million Brampton Züm project is being delivered in two phases with the feds, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Brampton investing equal amounts. The federal portion (up to $95 million) will come out of its FLOW program.

Phase 1 includes the construction of three BRT lines with scheduled completion by September 2010, September 2011 and September 2012. Phase 1 also includes significant relocation and/or redesign of two terminals with scheduled completion by September 2010 and September 2011.
