New overpass to enhance traffic flow between Mississauga and Brampton

The City of Mississauga announced that the Goreway Drive overpass, connecting Mississauga and Brampton, is now open. The newly constructed four-lane overpass over the CN rail tracks will significantly reduce traffic and allow for smoother travel for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Prior to construction, three sets of CN railway tracks crossed through Goreway Drive, about 300 meters north of Brandon Gate Drive in Mississauga. As one of the busiest freight train lines in the region, with approximately 50 freight trains using the east-west tracks per day, this caused significant traffic delays.

“For more than two decades, both as the former Ward 5 Councillor and as Mayor, I have advocated for this overpass to alleviate the delays and traffic headaches for Malton commuters. The overpass has been a long-standing priority for the City, and I’m thankful to both CN Rail and the City of Brampton for their collaboration on this project and the push to get it done,” said Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish.

With the new four-lane overpass, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will now travel over the CN railway tracks, eliminating the delays caused by the trains.

The completed Goreway Drive Improvement Project also includes:

  • New curbs, sidewalks, multi-use trail and landscaping
  • New retaining walls
  • New watermains and sewers
  • New street lighting

“With the completion of the Goreway Drive Overpass, we’re expanding important routes within the City’s transportation network. The project will get commuters and residents where they need to go faster – waiting for the trains to pass through the corridor will no longer be a barrier. We’re grateful to the Ward 5 residents and businesses for their patience during construction and for their ongoing support in making this project a reality,” said Sam Rogers, Commissioner, Transportation and Works.

Construction on the overpass started in September 2023. The total budget for the project was roughly $40 million and funded by the City of Mississauga, City of Brampton and CN Rail.

“This was a much-needed infrastructure project that many Malton residents are excited about. This investment makes travel along this busy corridor safer and more reliable for families, commuters, and commercial drivers, while also supporting future growth within the area. It will enhance safety and strengthen connections across both Brampton and Mississauga, connecting two key employment and growth areas,” said Ward 5 Councillor Natalie Hart
