The Government of Ontario announced plans to begin construction of replacement overpasses and bridges to accommodate future widening of Highways 401 and 400.
The replacement of Park Road and Cubert Street overpasses in Oshawa and the Dunlop Street bridge in Barrie will enable the widening of both highways to 10 lanes.
Dufferin Construction Company, a division of CRH Canada Group Inc. was awarded the contract to replace the Park Road and Cubert Street overpasses on Highway 401.
“Our government is investing billions of dollars in highway infrastructure that will support our growing population, and keep vehicles moving,” said Ric Bresee, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation. “Replacing Highway 401 overpasses in Oshawa and the Dunlop Street bridge is a critical step in our plan to widen the 401 and the 400 so we can tackle gridlock, grow our economy in the face of unprecedented tariffs, and support the drivers and businesses who rely on this highway every day.
Crews will replace the existing Dunlop Street underpass at Highway 400 with modifications to accommodate a 10-lane highway and install a new, taller concrete median barrier. Work will also be done to widen Dunlop Street between the Highway 400 interchange ramps.
“The replacement of Dunlop bridge will reduce gridlock, improve travel times and make it easier for residents to get around the city,” said Alex Nuttall, Mayor of the City of Barrie. “We’re grateful for the continued investment from the Ontario government on these critical infrastructure projects.”
“Today marks a major milestone for Oshawa,” said Dan Carter, Mayor of Oshawa. “The replacement of the Park Road and Cubert Street overpasses is more than just infrastructure—it’s a strategic investment in our city’s future. As Oshawa continues to grow, this project will help support local businesses, create good-paying jobs, and strengthen our economy as a whole.”
“Reducing gridlock on the 401 is essential for families and businesses in Whitby and other parts of the Region of Durham. By replacing overpasses and expanding lanes, our government is cutting travel times and giving families more time to spend together. This project will not only improve daily commutes but also help create a future of better roads and stronger communities,” said Lorne Coe, MPP Whitby.
