Manitoba invests $55.2M in infrastructure for Norway House

The Government of Manitoba announced it is investing $55.2 million in infrastructure upgrades for Norway House Cree Nation as part of the ongoing efforts to support growth and development in the region.

The investment includes the construction of a new airport terminal, demolition of the old terminal building and the transfer of radio centre controls.

“Treaty and York Boat Days are a powerful celebration of the rich heritage and enduring spirit of Norway House,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor. “As we honour the past, we are focused on building a strong future with roadway investments, a new two-lane bridge and a new airport terminal building to support growth, opportunity and long-term success for generations to come.”

As part of this investment, the Manitoba government is advancing a joint cost-shared feasibility study with the Government of Canada to replace the nearby Sea Falls Ferry with a permanent bridge. This project is currently undergoing consultation with rights holders and stakeholders, added the minister.

The construction of the new Norway House Airport terminal is already underway and is expected to be completed in 2027, the minister noted.

“These investments not only enhance safety and reliability for residents, but also open doors for economic development and help reduce the community’s isolation and instead, create a more connected, resilient and prosperous future for Norway House,” said Naylor.

Finally, surface rehabilitation work on Provincial Road (PR) 374 from PR 373 to 14 kilometres north of PR 373 is scheduled to begin this fall. Work on PR 373 in the community of Norway House is already underway and is expected to be completed this year. The two roadway projects represent a $50-million investment.

“Norway House is pleased the Manitoba government is moving forward with replacing the current airport terminal, which was built decades ago when the community was smaller and had far less air traffic,” said Chief Anderson Larson, Norway House Cree Nation. “This new terminal will significantly improve the existing structure. We look forward to working with the province on future improvements to ensure better air access. We also appreciate the provincial and federal government’s commitment to building a bridge over the Nelson River, providing a permanent link between Norway House Cree Nation and the rest of the province. These investments will help create a brighter future for our community.”
