Calgary breaks ground on Northeast Athletic Complex

The City of Calgary announced that construction is underway on the Northeast Athletic Complex (NEAC).

Located at 8500 40 St. N.E., the 35-acre, $170 million public recreation facility will serve people from northeast Calgary and across the city through Calgary’s first competition-capable cricket field, four outdoor multi-use artificial turf fields and a 162,500 square foot indoor fieldhouse. It will include cricket batting nets, spectator areas and team spaces as well as pathways, green spaces, picnic areas and playgrounds to support gathering, active living and community use.

“Breaking ground marks an important milestone in expanding recreation opportunities for people in Calgary,” said Mayor Jeromy Farkas. “The Northeast Athletic Complex is an investment in more than fields and facilities. It’s an investment in creating opportunities to be active, build connections and feel a sense of belonging.”

The Northeast Athletic Complex advances GamePLAN, The City’s 25-year vision and strategic framework for public recreation. Council adopted GamePLAN in 2025 and established Making Waves as the service level for public recreation facilities and amenities.

“This complex will add world-class amenities to our inventory and support the health and well-being of the community. This investment supports GamePLAN’s long-term goal of more equitable access to recreation and sport opportunities across the city,” said Jarret Hoebers, Acting Director of Recreation & Social Programs.

Construction is anticipated to be completed in early 2029.
