Brantford hospital’s new expanded emergency department opens

Brant Community Healthcare System’s new and expanded emergency department at Brantford General Hospital is now open.

Supported by a provincial investment of $28 million, the new facility is over 7,000 square feet larger than the hospital’s previous emergency department and will reduce wait times for the over 50,000 patients the hospital serves each year.

“Our government is making historic investments to expand emergency department capacity across the province, including investing $28 million to build a new and expanded emergency department right here in Brantford,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “The new and expanded emergency department at Brantford General Hospital will reduce wait times, increase capacity and deliver faster, high-quality emergency care for patients and families for years to come.”

The new state-of-the-art emergency department includes:

• New and expanded treatment rooms to support faster patient assessments
• A dedicated extended-stay area and an improved walk-in arrival area
• Additional mental health safe rooms and an expanded observation area
• Ambulance arrival and off-loading zone
• New Indigenous Family Space adjacent to the emergency department

The announcement builds on the nearly $16 million the government invested to support critical upgrades and repairs at Brantford General Hospital.

The province is also investing over $15 million to support the planning and construction of a new Brant Community Healthcare System hospital, which will expand capacity, improve services and reduce wait times, ensuring the hospital can continue to meet the needs of the region for years to come.

“This transformation will fundamentally improve how emergency care is delivered in our hospital, supporting high-quality, patient-centred care. We are also grateful to the BCHS Foundation and its generous donors for contributing more than $8 million in support of the project, demonstrating a shared commitment to strengthening care close to home,” said Bonnie Camm, president and CEO, Brant Community Healthcare System.
