Design-build team selected to deliver Brantford’s new sports centre

The City of Brantford officially approved the design and construction of the City’s new Sports and Entertainment Centre (SEC).

Stantec and Graham Construction have been selected to provide progressive design-build services for the $152 million project.

The new SEC will be a state-of-the-art venue with seating for 5,235 spectators. It will be designed to host Ontario Hockey League hockey, concerts, family shows, community celebrations, trade shows, and a wide variety of major events. Positioned prominently on Market Street with a new civic plaza that links it to the existing Civic Centre, the facility will become a key focal point for public gatherings and a powerful new anchor for the ongoing renewal of the downtown.

“This is a defining moment for Brantford,” said Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis. “Council’s approval of the Sports and Entertainment Centre and the official signing of an up to 40-year lease with the Brantford Bulldogs secures a long-term partnership that will strengthen our community and fuel our downtown’s renewal. This project is a generational investment, and the Bulldogs’ commitment affirms Brantford as their permanent home. Importantly, we’re bringing this vision to life with a practical and sustainable funding model.”

“We couldn’t be more excited for a new sports and entertainment complex in Brantford,” said Brantford Bulldogs General Manager Spencer Hyman. “This city is home, the place the Bulldogs belong, and where we’ll call home forever. None of this would be possible without the vision and leadership of Mayor Kevin Davis, and we’re incredibly grateful for his commitment to our community and our team.”

Construction of the Sports and Entertainment Centre is expected to begin in early 2026, with completion targeted for early 2028. As the project moves forward, the City will launch a comprehensive fundraising and sponsorship campaign and will continue refining design details with input from stakeholders and the community.

“Our design will embrace the city’s enthusiasm for a wide range of events, from sports tournaments to concerts and community gatherings, and offer a versatile addition to the urban landscape,” said Dathe Wong, design director for Stantec. “The result is a dynamic centre that will attract world-class entertainment and instill civic pride in the community.”

As part of the Brantford City Council’s approved adoption of a multi-faceted financial strategy, the SEC will play a central role in the city’s downtown revitalization efforts. The project is expected to generate $13.2 million in annual economic activity, create new local jobs, and contribute to the city’s civic growth.

Stantec’s design partners include Two Row Architect and Populous. With a local tie to Brantford, Two Row Architect will incorporate indigenous culture and traditional design elements rooted in the community. Populous will bring their expertise in creating accessible, adaptable, and sustainable sports and entertainment event spaces.
