Oak Valley Health (OVH) announced that early works construction of the new Uxbridge Hospital is officially underway, marking a major milestone in the transformation of health care in Uxbridge.
Joined by Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones, and MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge Peter Bethlenfalvy, Oak Valley Health president and CEO Mark Fam, and vice president and COO Elena Pacheco, gathered at the future hospital site for a kick-off ceremony — complete with hard hats and shovels — to celebrate the start of early works construction.
“This redevelopment reflects our vision of integrated care — bringing together a new hospital, post-acute care, long-term care, ambulatory services, and primary care in a more connected way to support every stage of a patient’s health journey,” said Fam. “It’s a step toward building healthier communities, with care that’s modern, accessible, and close to home.
“We’re proud to start construction on a future-ready health system that will serve patients and families for years to come.”
Funding provided by the Ontario Government allows OVH begin early works construction to ready the site for the creation of a larger, state-of-the-art space to expand services and ensure the hospital can continue to meet the needs of Uxbridge’s growing community. The next stage of the project includes the construction of the east portion of the north service road, the building of a retaining wall, and re-grading work.
PCL Construction’s civil team will prepare the site for the hospital’s transformative redevelopment project, including groundwork, site development and installation of site services.
“Since 1959, Uxbridge Hospital has been a trusted place of care, healing, and compassion,” said Pacheco. “And while much has changed over the decades, one thing has remained constant: this hospital’s deep connection to the people of Uxbridge and the surrounding region.”
The new hospital will feature:
- Increased patient capacity, with the addition of up to 11 new beds, bringing the total number of beds at the hospital to 31.
- Expansion of key services, including diagnostic imaging, cardiorespiratory services, and laboratory and pharmacy services.
- Increased access to inpatient, emergency and ambulatory services.
The project also includes a brand-new, 192-bed long-term care home — right on the hospital campus.
“The long-term care home will have an additional floor dedicated to ALC patients,” added Pacheco. “These are patients who no longer need to be in an acute care hospital bed, but are waiting for placement in a more appropriate setting, such as going home with home care, or to a long-term care facility or a rehabilitation centre.
“This additional floor will serve patients and families better and create desperately needed capacity at Uxbridge Hospital and at our Markham site.”
