The Grand Valley community gathered to celebrate the rehabilitation and expansion of the Grand Valley and District Community Centre.
Funding partners from the Town of Grand Valley, the Township of Amaranth and the Township of East Garafraxa and representatives from the federal and provincial governments commemorated the improvements . The project was funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure stream. The federal government provided $1,147,500 and the government of Ontario provided $956,154. The three municipalities are funding the balance of the $6,000,000 project.
“We are proud to support our growing communities and their needs for improved community infrastructure across Canada. The upgrades to the Grand Valley and District Community Centre have created a safer, more inclusive and inviting environment for community members to get active, celebrate special events and connect with others in the community.” said Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.
Starting in 2021, the Community Centre’s ice surface and boards have been replaced, new flooring replaced throughout the building, staff workspace has been restructured, and six brand new changerooms and accessible washrooms have been added to the north side of the building. The roof has been updated, the insulation and siding have been improved, referees have new changeroom space and a new pro shop has been added in partnership with a local business.
The Grand Opening event was followed by cake cutting and a free public skate with hot chocolate sponsored by the Community Centre.
“Our government is proud to support local infrastructure projects that lay the foundation for strong, resilient communities and make a real difference in people’s lives. The Grand Valley and District Community Centre rehabilitation and expansion project is part of the most ambitious capital plan in Ontario’s history, with investments of more than $223 billion over the next decade to build and expand infrastructure that will help keep workers on the job and support economic growth,” said Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s Acting Minister of Infrastructure.
“The Grand Valley and District Community Centre Board is thrilled with the changes to the community’s arena space. Thanks to the upper levels of government and the three municipal partners, our community has access to up-to-date, expanded facilities that are accessible for everyone to use. We look forward to many years of activity at the Community Centre,” said Gail Litte, Board Chair, Grand Valley and District Community Centre
