The Government of British Columbia announced that the Queensborough Bridge is receiving a major upgrade in 2026, bringing enhanced safety, reliability and longevity to the structure.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced a contract has been awarded for the major bridge renewal, which will include resurfacing, repairs, replacement of deck joints and drainage upgrades.
The $20.8-million contract has been awarded to Kingston Construction Ltd., with work expected to start in spring 2026 and complete in fall 2027.
The Queensborough Bridge was originally constructed in 1960 and carries four lanes of Highway 91A traffic, two lanes northbound and southbound, across the north arm of Fraser River, connecting New Westminster to Lulu Island. The bridge has undergone several major modifications over its lifespan, including seismic and safety upgrades with median-barrier installation and barrier walls to separate pedestrians from motorists.
The Queensborough Bridge carries nearly 88,000 vehicles per day, and the renewal of the bridge has been identified as a priority by the ministry’s asset management team.
