NB to invest in upgrades at Mathieu-Martin and Carrefour de l’Acadie schools

The Government of New Brunswick announced it is investing $1.5 million for preliminary work on mid-life upgrades at École Mathieu-Martin and École Carrefour de l’Acadie.

“We are committed to updating, improving and expanding the infrastructure of our schools,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Claire Johnson. “By investing in major upgrades, we can ensure that both of these schools will continue to serve their community for decades to come.”

The 12-year, $78.2-million project will begin with an assessment of the space needs of the school.

“The announcement of the mid-life upgrades and expansion of Carrefour de l’Acadie and Mathieu-Martin schools represents a long-awaited milestone for the Dieppe school community,” said Michel Côté, chair of the Francophone sud school district education council. “It reflects the vitality of our district and the importance of investing in infrastructure that matches the growth we are experiencing. The education council welcomes this decision and reaffirms its commitment to fostering close collaboration with the government to provide all our students with learning environments that are well-suited to their success and well-being.”

École Mathieu-Martin is one of the largest francophone schools in Atlantic Canada, with almost 1,500 students. The building it shares with École Carrefour de l’Acadie was constructed in 1971.

“The Dieppe area has grown substantially over the last five decades,” said Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin. “The schools need more space, and the needs of students and teachers have also changed significantly over that time. This is an investment in our community and the future of New Brunswick.”

One possibility being considered is an addition of more than 5,000 square metres, which would create more space for classrooms, multi-purpose and project areas, art and music rooms, resource rooms, computer and science labs, and gymnasiums.
