Peel Region marked the groundbreaking for Byngmount Shores, a seven-storey affordable rental community at 970 East Avenue in Mississauga’s Lakeview neighbourhood.
The development includes 150 rental homes, including family sized units and ground floor community space. Twenty-two per cent of the homes will be fully accessible. Peel Housing Corporation will own and operate the building and is a core partner in planning and delivering the project.
“Byngmount Shores shows what can be achieved when every order of government stands behind a shared commitment to expand affordable housing. I thank our federal, provincial and municipal partners for their leadership in advancing this work. Their collaboration gives more families a stable, attainable place to call home. Today’s groundbreaking reflects years of planning, determination, and a belief that communities thrive when people have secure housing,” said Nando Iannicca, CAO and Chair, Peel Region.
The project is supported by coordinated funding from all levels of government, including the Government of Canada through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Peel Region, and the City of Mississauga.
“This project brings affordable homes to a community that needs them and marks real progress for residents. It moves us closer to our goals for achieving a Community for Life in Peel by delivering results people will see and feel. It also shows how strong partnerships and careful system planning can turn longstanding needs into concrete action. This is the kind of practical, system building work that improves lives and communities,” said Steve Jacques, Human Services Commissioner, Peel Region.
Construction has begun, led by Martinway Developments Ltd. as the design builder, and the project is expected to finish in 2028.
