The Government of Ontario announced it is renovating and expanding Timmins and District Hospital’s emergency department to connect more patients and families in Northeastern Ontario to more convenient, high-quality emergency care closer to home.
“Our government is making historic investments to protect Ontario’s health-care system, ensuring that more people in Timmins and surrounding areas can connect to the care they need, where and when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “By investing in a new and expanded Timmins and District Hospital emergency department, we are making it faster and easier for more people and their families to access world-class emergency care in their community, for generations to come.”
Timmins and District Hospital will renovate and add over 27,000 square feet to the existing emergency department, expanding the new emergency department up to four times its current size. On average, more than 43,000 patients visit the emergency department at Timmins and District Hospital every year, with local demand only expected to increase.
Once complete, the new state-of-the-art emergency department will include:
- Modern and comfortable facilities to better support the growing needs of Northern communities
- Increased patient capacity with 29 dedicated patient treatment areas
- Dedicated area for emergency mental health care to connect more patients to enhanced mental health and addictions support while freeing up space in the emergency department
- Improved infection prevention and control measures to ensure the health and safety of all patients
“This investment in the Timmins and District Hospital emergency department is great news for people in Timmins and surrounding communities,” said George Pirie, MPP for Timmins. “By expanding and modernizing this facility, our government is ensuring patients and families can access the emergency care they deserve when they need it.”
As a next step, the Ministry of Health is working with Timmins and District Hospital to complete planning for this project, including determining final square footage. Once detailed planning is complete and the project is tendered and awarded, a construction schedule will be confirmed.
