Quebec invests more than $41M to improve port infrastructure in Trois-Rivières

The Government of Quebec announced an investment of $41,651,195 for major construction, development and infrastructure improvement work at the Port of Trois-Rivières.

“With this major investment, our government is making another very important economic gesture whose scope goes well beyond the transportation sector. These funds will strengthen the port’s intermodal capacity and give more leverage to an organization that is one of the strong links in the Eastern Canadian port network . This announcement once again demonstrates the relevance and dynamism emanating from our Avantage Saint-Laurent maritime strategy, launched here in June 2021,” said Geneviève Guilbault, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

The funds granted will be used for the reconstruction of wharf 17, the construction of a new wharf 16, the development of adjacent terminals and the backfilling of the basin formed by the current wharves 14, 15 and 16. This project also includes the installation of grain handling equipment by the company G3 Canada as well as two unloading gantries and a conveyor gallery for the unloading of alumina and calcined coke by Alcoa.

“I am very pleased to see this project come to fruition, as it will ultimately provide the Port of Trois-Rivières with the infrastructure and equipment needed to remain competitive. Once again, we are keeping our promise to support the major economic players who are at the heart of our region’s vitality. In addition to having a direct positive impact on the local economy, this project will have an impact on the performance of local businesses and their respective markets,” said Jean Boulet, MP for Trois-Rivières.

This project is consistent with Quebec’s Avantage Saint-Laurent maritime strategy, which aims to support maritime infrastructure projects aimed at market development and economic recovery.

“Thanks to the completion of this major project, terminals 16 and 17 at the Port of Trois-Rivières will be completely refurbished to provide modern infrastructure and new handling equipment to serve Quebec’s aluminum and agri-food industries. These new facilities will significantly improve the export productivity of the crops of 1,000 producers in the region with G3. The supply of raw materials to the Alcoa aluminum smelter in Deschambault will also be consolidated and optimized for many years to come. This is a promising project with significant benefits for our region and Quebec,” said Gaétan Boivin, president and CEO of the Port of Trois-Rivières.

The total cost of this project is estimated at $312 million and is supported by the following financial partners:

  • the government of Quebec
  • the Government of Canada , through the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF)
  • the Trois-Rivières Port Authority
  • G3 Canada
  • ALCOA

Avantage Saint-Laurent, Quebec’s maritime vision, is an ambitious plan based on the following three orientations:

  • provide the St. Lawrence with modern and competitive port infrastructure
  • ensure efficient navigation on the St. Lawrence that respects ecosystems
  • to provide maritime communities with opportunities for promising and sustainable development
