The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) held its annual general meeting in Vaughan, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford making an appearance as the keynote speaker at the event.
Other speakers included Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Rob Flack, Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca, and Mike Moffatt, PhD of the Missing Middle Initiative. In addition, a panel discussion was held with Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie, Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall, and John Capobianco, senior vice president and senior partner, national practice lead for public affairs at FleishmanHillard.
In his remarks, Ford said Ontario’s residential construction industry has never been more important.
“Without a strong economy, we don’t have the funds to invest in our healthcare, education and infrastructure, but none of this works if we can’t increase our supply of homes and keep the dream of home ownership alive for the next generation of young people and their families,” he said.
“But to increase the supply of homes, we know home builders need government doing what we can to create the conditions and the environment for growth and construction.”
Minister Flack reiterated the provinces’ support for the industry. “Our job is to create the conditions for (RESCON) to get homes built faster and keep construction workers on the job,” he said.
Part of that plan includes the creation of one building code for the entire province, something Flack said the government continues to work towards.
