EllisDon has been awarded, by the Government of Nova Scotia, the construction manager contract for the IWK Emergency Expansion project.

The IWK Emergency Expansion project will double the current size of the emergency department to accommodate the anticipated population growth. Once complete, the facility will provide more privacy and will meet the new infectious disease control and prevention measures.

“Expanding the IWK’s emergency department is an exciting step forward,” said Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson. “This project will mean a larger, more modern facility for patients, families, physicians and staff, and will also ensure the IWK continues to meet the standards of care that it is well known for around the Maritimes.”

The new four-level emergency department will be built on University Avenue in Halifax next to the existing parking garage near the front of the Children’s Building. The $102-million project involves the demolition of an existing underground parking facility and replacement with a new facility located underneath the new Emergency Department. The new Emergency Department addition will connect the east entrance of the Goldbloom Building with the north entrance of the Children’s Building.

“The IWK Emergency Department Expansion is an extremely important project for future patient care and services for our growing community,” says Shaun Stiles, Vice President and Area Manager, EllisDon Atlantic Canada. “We are honoured to be part of this next step forward for IWK Health and excited to continue our services for the Halifax community, which we have been a part of for more than 30 years.”
