The Government of Alberta announced that construction is complete on the $151-million expansion at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary which will create space for 97 new patient beds.
With the project completed in December 2025, crews are now outfitting the new spaces with furniture, equipment and other clinical tools. As each area is furnished over the coming months, Alberta Health Services will begin opening the spaces to patients, increasing access to emergency and specialized care in Calgary.
“Albertans expect a health care system they can rely on, and strong infrastructure is part of delivering this. The investment at Peter Lougheed Centre adds capacity, improves patient flow and gives health care teams the modern, well-designed spaces they need to best care for patients,” said Martin Long, Minister of Infrastructure.
This expansion strengthens Calgary’s health system by improving patient flow, reducing crowding and creating modern clinical environments that support both patients and front-line health care workers.
“Completing this expansion represents a significant increase in capacity in Calgary and will help ensure more Albertans receive the care they need in a timely manner,” addded Matt Jones, Minister of Hospitals and Surgical Health Services.
The completion of Phase 2 at the Peter Lougheed Centre ensures patients can receive emergency and specialized services when and where they need them most.
“This expanded emergency department gives every physician, nurse and staff member the environment they need to deliver exceptional care when seconds truly matter, and every improvement in this space translates directly into better experiences and outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. Meghan Vlasschaert, medical director, Peter Lougheed Centre.
