Contract awarded for Stevenson Hospital Phase 1 Redevelopment

The Government of Ontario, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and The Stevenson Memorial Hospital have awarded a fixed-price contract valued at $174 million to Pomerleau Inc. to deliver the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Phase 1 Redevelopment Project in Alliston.

The redevelopment will revitalize and significantly expand the hospital’s clinical spaces equipped with advanced technology and modern facilities, including a 24-hour emergency department, medical/ surgical inpatient unit, a fully equipped laboratory, surgical suites, obstetrics and a range of specialized care areas. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2026.

“By investing in the redevelopment of Stevenson Memorial Hospital, we are making it faster and easier for more people and their families to access world-class hospital care in their community, for generations to come,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.

The Stevenson Memorial Hospital Redevelopment Project is being undertaken to redevelop, revitalize, and expand the hospital. At approximately146,200 square-feet, the newly designed wrap-around expansion of the hospital will include a replacement and expansion of the existing hospital’s acute care areas and associated support functions.

“This is an exciting milestone in Stevenson Memorial Hospital’s journey towards building a new hospital facility. Many years of planning have brought us to this moment, and we look forward to continuing on our journey alongside Pomerleau Inc., the Ontario government and its agency Infrastructure Ontario to bring an expanded, modern hospital to New Tecumseth and surrounding communities,” said Carmine Stumpo, supervisor, Stevenson Memorial Hospital.

Stevenson Memorial Hospital opened its doors for the first time on June 30, 1928. What exists today is its second hospital structure, built in 1964. Stevenson has grown from a small, rural hospital due to the significant growth in the community. The facility’s infrastructure requires an expansion to meet the growing needs of the community it serves. The Town of New Tecumseth is the seventh fastest growing municipality in Canada as per the 2021 Census, experiencing 28 per cent growth in population since 2016. The ongoing and rapid growth of the region is predicted to continue, and this redevelopment project is needed to ensure that Stevenson Memorial Hospital has the infrastructure necessary to meet the increasing demand.

The original 1964 design was intended to manage 7,000 visits per year, but they have seen up to almost 40,000 visits annually, with the increase in visits being driven by the increase in population and aging of the surrounding community.

The redevelopment project will allow Stevenson Memorial Hospital to increase inpatient bed capacity by 20 per cent and will triple the square footage of the existing hospital.

“Congratulations to the project partners on reaching this pivotal milestone in delivering a new and expanded Stevenson Memorial Hospital. Once complete, this modern facility will transform health care for families and residents in New Tecumseth and its surrounding communities. Thanks to Premier Ford’s leadership, our government is investing nearly $60 billion in health infrastructure across the province, as part of our more than $220 billion capital plan to support growing communities, keep workers on the job and protect Ontario,” said Todd McCarthy, Acting Minister of Infrastructure.
