The City of Calgary announced that construction of the first Green Line LRT bridge is complete.

Twelve months ago, work was just getting underway at the future Blackfoot Trail LRT bridge. Today, EllisDon crews have transformed the site from an active construction zone into the first major Green Line structure to be completed in southeast Calgary.

The Green Line LRT is No. 13 on ReNew Canada’s 2026 Top100 Projects report.

The new Blackfoot Trail LRT bridge, located just south of Crossroads Market, was built to carry future Green Line trains over Blackfoot Trail SE. The bridge also includes space for a multi-use pathway, helping integrate future LRT infrastructure with the surrounding pathway network.

Construction of the bridge began in October 2025 and included site grading and erosion and sediment control, followed by drilling concrete piles to establish the bridge foundations and constructing the abutments on either side of Blackfoot Trail.

Pre-stressed concrete I-beams were then installed between the abutments to form the bridge girders, followed by construction of the concrete bridge deck. The deck was designed to accommodate the future Green Line tracks as well as a multi-use pathway.

The project also included drainage infrastructure, overhead catenary system pole hardware for the system that will eventually provide power to Green Line trains, and restoration and landscaping around the bridge site.

By 2031, this bridge will carry Green Line trains into and out of 26 Avenue SE Station at Crossroads Market and provide a new multi-use pathway connection for people walking and cycling.
