The governments of Canada and Quebec announced the opening of the final section of Highway 35, between Saint-Sébastien and Saint-Armand. This will provide road users with four separate lanes between Montreal and the U.S. border.
With the completion of this important milestone, the mobility of people and goods between Quebec and the United States will be facilitated. In addition, road safety and the quality of life for residents along Route 133 will be improved, since trucks will be able to use this new, faster route.
“Safety is always at the heart of our priorities, as this new achievement demonstrates. With the opening of the last section of Highway 35, we are allowing road users to travel on a roadway with a highway profile, from Montreal to Boston . Another project delivered, for the benefit of our citizens,” said Geneviève Guilbault, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
Phase III of this major project, which extends over 8.9 km, includes extensive road infrastructure as well as a major environmental compensation plan. This plan has enabled the creation of 1 hectare of wetlands and 4 hectares of fish habitats, as well as the reforestation of more than 24 hectares of forest, thanks to the planting of 35,000 trees, and the protection of 75 hectares of land of high ecological value.
“Your new federal government is committed to investing in projects that promote modern, environmentally friendly infrastructure that connects communities. The opening of the final section of Highway 35 marks a pivotal moment for mobility in Quebec. In addition to reducing travel times and stimulating economic growth, this project improves road safety for decades to come,” said Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.
The total cost of its implementation is $222.9 million, which includes a financial contribution of $82.1 million from the federal government through the New Building Canada Fund 2014-2024.
“The opening of the final section of Highway 35 is a big step for Brome-Missisquoi. It will make our roads smoother and safer, and it will also give a big boost to our local economy and the quality of life of our residents. I am proud to see our community benefit from a project that is moving forward while respecting the environment. Thank you to all the partners who worked together to make this a reality,” said Louis Villeneuve, MP for Brome-Missisquoi.
The third phase of the extension of Highway 35 included several major works such as:
- the extension of Highway 35 over a distance of 8.9 km between Saint-Sébastien and Saint-Armand , with two lanes in each direction on separate roadways;
- the construction of a bridge approximately 400 m long over the Brochets River, at Pike River;
- the development of an interchange and an overpass at the junction of Highway 35, Champlain Road and Route 133, in Saint-Armand ;
- the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Route 133 and Champlain and Moulin roads, in Saint-Armand ;
- the construction of an overpass (extension of Route 202) over Highway 35, in Pike River;
- the implementation of a compensation project aimed at offsetting the cumulative impacts of the extension of Highway 35 (phases I to III) on the environment. This project is located between the highway right-of-way and the Brochets River in the municipalities of Pike River and Saint-Armand.
