Federal government releases Budget 2026

François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, released Budget 2026: Masters of our destiny.

Highlights include:

  • It proposes major tax policy changes, the new Productivity Mega Deduction and the Canada Strong Fund to help make Canada the destination of choice for global investors.
  • It provides funding for the Canada Electricity Strategy to double grid capacity by 2050 to meet growing demand, while accelerating electrification, grid modernisation and clean power expansion.
  • It makes investments in nuclear energy and critical minerals that will create high-paying jobs for Canadians, grow exports and strengthen Canada’s position as a global energy superpower.
  • It strengthens our sovereignty and defence capabilities, supports our Canadian Armed Forces members and their families, and helps ensure Canadians feel safe in their communities, at home, and online.

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) welcomed the federal government’s continued commitment to building Canada’s housing, infrastructure and industrial capacity, noting the budget takes a fiscally prudent approach while making important investments in housing supply, community infrastructure, Indigenous infrastructure and major projects that will create opportunities for Canada’s construction industry.

CCA is particularly encouraged by the additional $13 billion for Build Canada Homes, the continued implementation of the Build Communities Strong Fund to help reduce development charges and barriers to new construction, and investments in First Nations on-reserve infrastructure. The advancement of major projects and measures to improve government efficiency and streamline processes are also positive steps toward strengthening Canada’s capacity to build.

“Canada needs to build, and this budget recognizes the important role construction plays in delivering on that ambition,” said Rodrigue Gilbert, President of CCA. “We appreciate the government’s action on housing supply, strengthening communities, and advancing projects of national importance. The next priority must be ensuring the conditions are in place to turn these commitments into completed projects.”

New Economy Canada, a non-partisan initiative of companies, labour unions and Indigenous organizations, said it strongly supports the finalization and funding of Powering Canada Strong in Budget 2026 with a $50 billion commitment, marking an important step toward doubling Canada’s electricity supply by 2050.

“Today we are celebrating a critical win for Canada, said Ian Bruce, president of New Economy Canada said. “By finalizing and funding Powering Canada Strong, the federal government has made electricity an economic priority. Budget 2026’s $50B commitment to doubling the grid, including strengthening and extending the clean economy investment tax credits, is a significant step.

“Budget 2026 puts an electrified economy at the heart of Canada’s economic strategy. We are glad to see the federal government recognize that building more clean electricity, electrifying more of our economy, and improving energy efficiency are some of the most effective ways to build a competitive, strong economy and ensure energy security for businesses and households alike.”
