About The Project

The BC Children’s and BC Women’s Redevelopment Project is building a new Teck Acute Care Centre at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre in addition to renovating other areas on the Oak Street campus to serve both the current and future needs of children, youth, women, and families throughout British Columbia.

The redevelopment project is a three phase initiative of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) in partnership with UBC Faculty of Medicine and the BC Ministry of Health. BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre are both agencies of PHSA.

Designed with patients and their families and care teams in mind, the redevelopment project’s vision is for a campus of patient-centred care that operates in an environment of quality, excellence, and innovation. The renovations and new facilities will also assist in attracting and retaining health professionals, clinical staff, and researchers.

The Redevelopment Project is now in Phase 2, which involves the construction of the Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC) and the renovation of the Assessment Room/Urgent Care Centre (UCC) in the BC Women’s Hospital main building. The building will be 59,400 square-metres with eight floors of clinical space with 231 inpatient rooms and 87 outpatient exam beds. The TACC will be a sustainable building that will meet or exceed Canadian LEED Gold standards. It will include healing gardens, public art, and a one-kilometre Wellness Walkway that will encircle the hospital site.

In April, the hospital celebrated the pouring of 32,600 cubic metres of
concrete with 4,600 tonnes of rebar, creating the foundation for the Teck
Acute Care Centre. The Centre will see its first patient in late 2017.
