The City of Windsor and Transit Windsor celebrated the official groundbreaking of the Transit Centre Garage Expansion project at 3700 North Service Road East.
The project is the latest phase of a broader, multi-phase investment to modernize Transit Windsor’s primary operations facility. Of the $39.3 million approved for Transit Centre improvements, this phase represents approximately $32.5 million in upgrades, with several improvements already completed.
“Public transit is a core municipal service,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens, City of Windsor. “Recent announcements for the new West End and East End terminals, the upcoming new Umo fare management system, and today’s groundbreaking for the Garage Expansion project represent over $50 million worth of investment in public transit in our city.”
This project represents a significant investment in Transit Windsor’s future and will modernize the organization’s primary operations facility through the following:
- Approximately 46,000 square feet in building additions to expand the bus storage bay and maintenance areas
- Upgrading building systems
- Improving bus service bays
- Replacing the bus wash and vehicle fueling systems
- Parking lot, sidewalk, and laneway replacement
- Site lighting and control upgrades
- Electrical service and distribution improvements
- Landscaping, planting, and site restoration
- New gates and fencing
Funded by the Government of Canada ($15.3 million), and the Province of Ontario ($12.7 million) through the Public Transit stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), and with an investment by the City of Windsor ($11.3 million), the overall project includes facility upgrades that will improve operational efficiency and support future service needs.
Construction is being phased to support continued transit operations while improvements are completed, minimizing impacts to riders and ensuring reliable service throughout the project.
