EllisDon announced that the Centennial College Block A Expansion has achieved WELL Silver Certification, under the WELL building standard.
WELL Certification focuses on human health and wellness and building structures that prioritize and enhance the well-being of all occupants. WELL’s standards are built on the latest scientific research on the impact of space on health and well-being, and industry best practices. This multifaceted approach to human wellness is designed to address a range of issues prevalent in modern environments, from mitigating burnout, to increasing movement, to safe air and drinking water.
“We focused on specific design decisions that prioritized air quality, water quality and thermal comfort,” said Pablo Lopez Arbelaez, project manager, Sustainable Building Solutions, EllisDon. “These are sustainability practices that align with EllisDon’s values, as well as Centennial College’s health-oriented mission. Our mutual goal is to improve the well-being of all Block A occupants, and achieving the WELL Silver Certification is a significant milestone in that journey.”
The college held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in September, 2023 to officially open A-Building ─ Canada’s first LEED Gold, zero carbon, mass timber, higher-education building.
An Indigenous Working Group made vital contributions to Indigenous elements of the build as the College worked with Colliers Project Leaders, EllisDon Construction, DIALOG and Smoke Architecture to deliver the approximately $112-million project. Spanning six storeys and more than 130,000 square feet, the expansion was accompanied by a 15,000-square-foot renovation.
