Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Trillium Health Partners (THP) have awarded a fixed-priced contract of $1.3 billion to EllisDon Corporation to build and finance the redevelopment project of The Future Home of The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre.
EllisDon was prequalified in May 2022 to continue in the procurement process. Selection criteria included the required construction experience and financial capacity to deliver a project of this size and complexity. The procurement process was overseen by a third-party fairness advisor.
“Trillium Health Partners is proud to partner with Infrastructure Ontario and EllisDon Corporation on this historic project that will serve our community for generations to come. Once completed, The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre will have space for over 350 beds, allowing us to increase our hospital’s capacity to provide quality health care from Milton to Toronto. This milestone brings us one step closer to more beds, shorter wait times, and greater specialization closer to home,” said Karli Farrow, president and CEO, Trillium Health Partners.
“Infrastructure Ontario is proud to be collaborating with Trillium Health Partners and EllisDon to deliver this essential piece of healthcare infrastructure. Existing hospital operations will continue in their entirety while we undertake this work, and once fully operational, this new facility will help support the delivery of high-quality care to help meet the growing demand for health care services in Etobicoke, Peel Region and the surrounding communities,” said Michael Lindsay, president & CEO, Infrastructure Ontario.
“The redevelopment of the Queensway Health Centre is a signature project that will aid in providing complex continuing care and rehabilitation services for residents in Peel Region, Etobicoke and surrounding communities. We look forward to beginning construction on this vital infrastructure project and working together with Infrastructure Ontario and Trillium Health Partners to ensure patients and families will have a centralized place to access high-quality care,” said Joey Comeau, COO and executive vice president, EllisDon Capital.
The Future Home of The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre facility will include:
- New patient tower, including a modern nine-story facility with over 350 beds
- Increased capacity for specialized care including complex continuing care and rehabilitation services
- 100% private rooms
- New standalone Central Utility Plant
- New parking structure (delivered separately)
“Ontario is making historic investments in healthcare infrastructure and building state-of-the-art facilities that connect people to the care they need and deserve, closer to home. This important milestone will ensure that the families and residents of Etobicoke have easier access to critical healthcare and demonstrates our commitment towards building a healthier and more resilient Ontario for all of us,” said Ontario Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma.
Site preparation work is set to begin February 2024 with ground-breaking in the spring of 2024. Patient tower occupancy and final completion is planned for 2029.
