The Government of Ontario announces an investment of more than $18 million through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream (MHIP-HECS) to support improvements to Sunningdale Road West, between Wonderland Road and Villagewalk Boulevard.
“London’s growth is exciting, but it also means we have work to do,” said Minister Rob Flack, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London. “This investment in Sunningdale Road is about preparing for that growth. We’re making it easier for people to get around, putting in the infrastructure we need for new homes, and supporting a stronger, safer community. It’s about building a safer, stronger London for today and for the future.”
The improvements will include expanding the roadway from two to four lanes, adding new sidewalks, cycling lanes, lighting and new stormwater infrastructure to improve drainage. A new bridge will be built for an expanded road crossing at Medway Creek, which will include a pathway connection along the creek.
“Investing in local infrastructure is part of our government’s plan to protect Ontario, strengthen the economy and create more well-paying jobs,” said the Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma. “The Sunningdale Road West improvements project is part of our government’s nearly $2.3 billion investment in housing and community-enabling infrastructure and will ensure that the City of London has access to better infrastructure, including roads, bridges and culverts, that will support residents and businesses for years to come. This funding will also enable over 5,000 new homes.”
“London is growing quickly, and this important investment from the province helps us build for the future and ensure our city is ready,” said London Mayor Josh Morgan. “This project will benefit everyone using the road, provide more mobility choices for Londoners traveling through the city, and will upgrade important underground infrastructure needed to support new homes.”
The project is anticipated to begin construction in 2026.
Improving Sunningdale Road is part of the City’s long-term plan for the area to support road safety and accommodate our growing city. This HECS-funded project will build a complete street, and it will better connect Sunningdale Road with the upgraded intersection at Richmond Street as well as the roundabout at Wonderland Road.
The investment announced today is an addition to the province’s investment of more than $23 million from August 2024 to help enable the construction of over 22,000 new homes in the city, under the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund and the Housing-Enabling Core Services funding. This brings the government’s total investment in London to over $42 million to help build more homes and keep workers on the job.
