Ontario is supporting Quinte Health Care to plan for a new hospital in Picton so that patients and their families continue to have access to quality health care closer to home.

“This support from the Ontario government means we are a significant step closer to building a new PECMH (Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital) that will benefit county residents for generations to come,” said Mary Clare Egberts, president and CEO, Quinte Health Care. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate this milestone and look forward to working with patients, our partners, staff and physicians to move to the next stage of planning for the new PECMH.”

This project would result in a new, modern facility that would include improved infection prevention, patient and family experience and staff safety. Support from the province will also help Quinte Health Care to:

  • Better meet the needs of a rapidly aging population with increasing levels of chronic disease;
  • Improve the quality and safety of patient care;
  • Provide more effective care transitions; and
  • Support greater collaboration and integration with other health care partners for a better patient experience.

“About three years ago, partners who held various responsibilities for this very significant project, came back to the table and recommitted to a renewed focus in seeing the development of a new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital,” said Paul Huras, chief executive officer of the South East Local Health Integration Network. “Today’s exciting announcement is an important one, and each milestone like this is an integral step in bringing the vision of this new hospital closer to reality.”

Ontario is providing a planning grant of up to $500,000 to help Quinte Health Care with planning for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Redevelopment. Planning grants provide funding for early planning stages only — a planning grant does not mean approval to build.

Ontario is providing funding for over 2,000 additional beds and spaces across the province in 2017-18. This investment includes 15 additional beds at Quinte Health Care Corporation to provide access to care and reduce wait times, whether in hospital, at home or in the community.
