The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) celebrated alongside municipal employees at the official opening of the Public Works North Operations Centre.
Located at 24 Silin Forest Road, the facility represents a critical investment in the future of public services in Fort McMurray. It gives employees and the community a public works facility that is functional, efficient and visually appealing.
“We’re pleased to see the North Operations Centre open as it will help deliver more efficient services to the community,” said Mayor Sandy Bowman. “Today is also an opportunity to express appreciation to the Public Works team and all those that work with them across the Municipality, and to the Province for its collaboration in providing important support for this project.”
“The former roads satellite yard had served its time and needed replacing. With the new North Operations Centre, our equipment is now stored indoors, helping lower maintenance costs, reduce emissions and extend the life of our fleet,” added Keith Smith, Director of Public Works. “With approximately 80-90 pieces of equipment, on-site repairs mean fewer breakdowns and faster service, especially during snow removal season. We’re proud of this facility and what it means for delivering reliable service to our residents for years to come.”
Key features of the Operations Centre include:
- Administration Building: Two-storey, 25,000 sq. ft. office with open work areas
- 20 Garage Bays and three Wash Bays to support the equipment maintenance
- Vehicle Storage Facility: 38,000 sq. ft. heated space designed for year-round public works operations
- Technology Integration: Audio-visual systems in key areas to support collaboration and workplace needs
