With concrete pouring officially underway, Trillium Health Partners (THP) reached a major construction milestone in building of The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children.
This milestone was marked with a ceremonial coin toss with government, donors and Team THP as part of a construction tradition symbolizing good luck, followed by crews pouring the coins into the foundation for the future hospital. One year after breaking ground, this progress marks an important step forward on a redevelopment that will deliver expanded health care capacity in Mississauga.
“This moment represents something very real for our community: we are laying the foundation for a new kind of health system in Mississauga and beyond,” said Karli Farrow, president and CEO, Trillium Health Partners. “More than just a building and beds, we are also redesigning care to be more connected, more digitally enabled and more centred on the needs of patients and families, improving access, strengthening partnerships across the system and delivering better outcomes for generations to come.”
“Today marks a historic milestone for residents in Mississauga and Peel as we continue to make progress on The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children. The new hospital will provide convenient, world-class care to over two million people,” said Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario.
The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children are being designed as a modern hub of care that connects hospital services with primary care, home and community services, and long-term care to improve the patient experience. Anchored within The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will be digitally enabled and connected across hospital, ambulatory, virtual and community-based services, helping women, children and families experience care as one coordinated system rather than a series of disconnected steps.
The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital is No. 4 on ReNew Canada’s 2026 Top100 Projects report.
Progress at the Mississauga Hospital site continues to advance on track and on budget. Some highlights include:
- Excavation is now over 78% complete
- The site spans 250,000 square feet (approximately 15 hockey rinks)
- 7 tower cranes have arrived onsite
- Concrete foundation, footings, walls and column work has begun
- New roundabout to open off of Bronte College Court this summer to enable access to all entrances
In July, 2025, Infrastructure Ontario and THP, in partnership with the Ontario government, awarded a fixed-price contract of $13.9 billion to ED+PCL Healthcare Partners to design, build, finance and maintain The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children.
“This event highlights the outstanding progress our project team has made over the past year and recognizes their daily dedication to moving the work forward. We are grateful for the continued effort and commitment that have brought us to this milestone. As we enter the next phase of construction, ED+PCL Healthcare Partners are excited to continue working with all key stakeholders and partners to safely deliver this landmark hospital to the highest standards for Trillium Health Partners and the Mississauga community,” said Kieran Hawe, president and CEO, EllisDon Corporation.
“Together with ED+PCL Healthcare Partners, Infrastructure Ontario, Trillium Health Partners, and our design and trade partners, we’re proud to mark the one-year milestone since breaking ground on the future Mississauga Hospital. The progress we’ve made this past year reflects what’s possible through strong partnerships, collaboration, and a shared vision for success. We are grateful to everyone involved whose expertise and commitment are bringing this project to life every day, benefiting the Mississauga community for generations to come,” said Chris Gower, president and CEO, PCL Construction.
