The Government of Ontario announced it is investing over $4.5 million to support the redevelopment and expansion of Oak Valley Health – Uxbridge. This new funding builds on the $3 million the government has previously invested to support early planning for the redevelopment.
“With the approval for early works to begin at the Uxbridge Hospital Redevelopment Site, we are a step closer to getting it done,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge. “The early works will allow for the necessary infrastructure for the new Long-Term Care and Hospital buildings, paving the way for the brighter future for healthcare in Uxbridge.”
Through this new investment, several site works will be completed to support the next stage of Oak Valley Health – Uxbridge’s redevelopment project, including the construction of the east portion of the north service road and the provision of a new mechanical generator. The expansion of the hospital will create a larger, state-of-the-art space to expand services and ensure the hospital can continue to meet the needs of the Uxbridge community. Site work is set to begin once the construction contract is awarded and is scheduled to be completed prior to the main project commencing construction.
“Our government is making historic investments in Ontario’s hospitals to ensure people of all ages can access the care they need, where and when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “This investment to support Early Works construction at Oak Valley Health – Uxbridge is another step forward in their redevelopment and will ensure families in Uxbridge can access high-quality care in their community, for generations to come.”
As previously announced, the redevelopment will bring health care and community providers together across three facilities: a new hospital, a long-term care home, and an ambulatory care building. This initiative aims to enhance the patient experience and improve access to integrated, high-quality care. The long-term care home is planned to accommodate 192 beds, 92 of which are new beds for the region.
Once completed, the expanded hospital will include:
- Increased bed capacity, with the addition of 11 new beds, bringing the total number of beds at the hospital up to 31 beds.
- Expansion of key services, including diagnostic imaging, cardiorespiratory services, and laboratory and pharmacy services.
- Increased access to inpatient, emergency and ambulatory services.
“As the communities we serve continue to grow, so does our responsibility to provide modern, accessible, and integrated health care,” said Mark Fam, Oak Valley Health president and CEO. “This redevelopment will not only enhance hospital care but also expand long-term care and ambulatory services to better support patients at every stage of their health journey.
“We are excited to take this next step in building a future-ready health care campus that will serve patients and families, close to home, for years to come.”
As a next step, the ministry is working with Oak Valley Health and Infrastructure Ontario to issue the Request for Proposals to tender this project. Once the project is tendered and awarded, a construction schedule will be confirmed.
